Fall Skincare in Chicago: Why Your Skin Changes & the Best Facials for the Season

Fall seasonal facial at Facial Studio Magdalena in River North Chicago

There’s a moment every fall in Chicago when your skin seems to get the memo before you do.

One week, it’s warm and humid. The next, the temperature drops, the wind picks up, the heat comes on indoors—and suddenly your skin feels completely different.

Maybe your face feels tight after cleansing. Your usual moisturizer isn’t quite enough. Your skin looks dull. Makeup isn’t sitting as nicely. Or you’re somehow dealing with dryness and clogged pores at the same time.

Welcome to fall skincare in Chicago.

At Facial Studio Magdalena in River North, this is the time of year when we start adjusting treatment plans. Summer skin and fall skin don’t always need the same thing, and October is a perfect time to reassess what your skin is asking for.

It’s also when we love encouraging clients to check out our seasonal facials. These treatments are created around what skin tends to need right now, making them a fun way to change up your routine while still receiving a customized professional treatment.

Why Does My Skin Get So Dry in Chicago Fall?

Chicago doesn’t exactly ease us gently from summer into winter.

As outdoor temperatures and humidity begin to drop, indoor heating starts coming on. Add Chicago wind, hot showers and an active skincare routine, and skin that felt comfortable in August may suddenly feel tight or dehydrated in October.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to abandon your entire routine and coat your face in the heaviest cream you can find.

It means we need to look at your skin barrier.

Your skin barrier helps keep moisture in and irritants out. When it’s compromised, skin may feel dry, tight, sensitive, flaky or generally uncomfortable.

And here’s something important:

Dehydrated skin isn’t always visibly dry.

You can have oily or acne-prone skin and still be dehydrated.

That distinction matters because if your response to tight skin is to scrub and exfoliate more aggressively, you may make the problem worse.

Your Fall Skincare Routine Shouldn’t Be Your Summer Routine

In July, many of our Chicago clients want everything to feel light.

Light moisturizer. Lightweight SPF. Less layering. More oil control.

By October and November, that same routine may not provide enough support.

This is when we may start looking at things like a gentler cleansing routine, additional hydration, barrier-supportive products and whether some of your active ingredients need to be adjusted.

But we don’t automatically overhaul everything.

At Facial Studio Magdalena, we believe every product in your routine should have a reason for being there.

Seasonal skincare is about adjusting—not starting over.

What Is the Best Facial for Fall in Chicago?

This is one of those questions where our answer is always:

What is your skin doing right now?

If your skin feels dry and depleted, you may need something very different from someone whose primary concern is post-summer pigmentation or clogged pores.

That’s why we don’t believe there is one “best fall facial” for everyone.

October can be a great time for a hydrating or barrier-supportive facial, a customized corrective treatment, a professional peel—or simply one of our seasonal facials if you want something fresh, timely and designed around the season.

Our seasonal facial menu changes, so check our current offerings when you book. We love these treatments because they give existing clients something new to experience while introducing new clients to the Facial Studio Magdalena approach.

And yes, they’re seasonal and fun.

But this is still Facial Studio Magdalena.

We customize.

Don’t Ignore What Summer Left Behind

Fall isn’t only about dryness.

October is often when clients start noticing what summer left behind.

That little dark spot looks darker.

The post-acne marks seem more obvious.

Your skin tone doesn’t look as even.

Your pores feel congested from months of heat, sweat and sunscreen.

Your skin just looks…tired.

This is why fall is one of our favorite seasons for corrective skincare in Chicago.

If pigmentation is the main concern, we may discuss treatments such as our Pigment Perfect Peel.

For appropriate acne-prone or congested skin, our Clear Skin Peel may be incorporated into the treatment plan.

For clients focused on tone, texture and visible signs of aging, BioRePeel may be an option.

And for someone looking at the complexion more broadly—texture, dullness, discoloration and overall skin quality—we may recommend our Skin Perfecting treatment.

The treatment should follow the concern.

Not the trend.

What If My Skin Is Dry AND Breaking Out?

This is incredibly common.

Clients sometimes assume acne-prone skin should always be dried out.

It shouldn’t.

You can have clogged pores, active breakouts and dehydration simultaneously.

In fact, this is one reason we spend so much time looking at the entire routine of our acne clients.

If you’re using an acne cleanser, exfoliating toner, acne serum, spot treatment and retinoid—and your skin feels tight and irritated—adding another exfoliating product may not be the answer.

At Facial Studio Magdalena, acne is one of our specialties, and our founder has been a Face Reality Certified Acne Expert since 2011.

Our approach isn’t to attack acne as aggressively as possible.

We want to get you clear while keeping the skin functioning well.

Depending on your acne, that may mean an Acne Correcting Treatment, Face Reality Acne Bootcamp, Clear Skin Peel, professional extractions and customized home care.

And as Chicago weather changes, that home care may need to change too.

Fall Is Also the Beginning of Peel Season

If you’ve been waiting to get serious about pigmentation, post-acne marks, texture or dullness, fall is a great time to have the conversation.

Chemical peels can be performed at different times of year when appropriate, but many Chicago clients find fall and winter especially convenient because their lifestyles naturally involve less intense outdoor sun exposure than during summer.

We offer several corrective options, including Clear Skin Peel, Pigment Perfect Peel and BioRePeel, depending on the skin concern.

For clients focused specifically on stubborn pigmentation, we also offer a Hyperpigmentation Package with six Pigment Perfect Peels.

But we don’t choose the strongest treatment simply because it’s peel season.

If your barrier is compromised, your skin is irritated or you’re not a good candidate for a particular treatment right now, we’ll tell you.

Sometimes repairing the skin first is the most corrective thing we can do.

Hydration Doesn’t Mean Giving Up on Results

There can be a misconception that a hydrating facial is basically a relaxing treatment that doesn’t “do” anything.

We don’t see skincare that way.

Supporting hydration and the skin barrier can be an important part of a results-driven plan.

This is especially true when we’re also using corrective ingredients or professional treatments.

If we’re asking the skin to tolerate exfoliation, retinoids or other active products, we also need to support it appropriately.

At Facial Studio Magdalena, we love professional skincare from brands including Hydrinity, Face Reality and #SKIN, and we customize home care according to what your skin actually needs.

You shouldn’t have to choose between healthy skin and corrective skincare.

The two should work together.

What Should I Stop Doing to My Skin in Fall?

The first thing we’d reconsider is automatically treating every bit of dryness with more exfoliation.

If your skin suddenly feels rough, it’s tempting to think:

“I need to scrub this off.”

Not necessarily.

That roughness may be a sign that your skin is dehydrated or irritated.

We’d also be careful about introducing several new active products simultaneously just because summer is over.

Retinoids, acids, peels and brightening ingredients can all have a place in a good skincare program.

That doesn’t mean you need all of them at full strength on the same night.

More isn’t always better.

Strategic is better.

When Should I Start Preparing My Skin for the Holidays?

Earlier than you think.

If you have Thanksgiving, holiday parties, family photos, travel or winter events coming up, October is the time to start planning.

If all you want is a beautiful glow before an event, we can help you time an appropriate facial.

But if you’re hoping to improve acne, pigmentation or texture, give us more time.

Corrective skincare isn’t something we want to rush the week before your event.

Starting in October gives us time to evaluate the skin, perform appropriate treatments and make adjustments before the holiday season is in full swing.

And if you simply want your skin to look refreshed and feel amazing right now?

Check out our current seasonal facials.

They’re one of our favorite ways to celebrate the change in season—and your skin will probably appreciate the change too.

Why Choose Facial Studio Magdalena for Fall Skincare in Chicago?

Facial Studio Magdalena isn’t a one-facial-fits-everyone spa.

From our studio in River North, downtown Chicago, we specialize in results-driven corrective skincare for acne, hyperpigmentation and anti-aging concerns.

But results-driven doesn’t always mean aggressive.

Sometimes results mean clearing congestion.

Sometimes they mean addressing pigmentation.

Sometimes they mean stimulating collagen.

And sometimes they mean recognizing that your skin barrier needs attention before we ask your skin to do anything else.

Our job is to look at your skin today and decide what makes sense for where you want it to go.

Fall Skincare FAQ

Why does my face get dry every fall in Chicago?

Lower outdoor humidity, colder temperatures, wind and indoor heating can all contribute to skin feeling drier or more dehydrated during fall and winter. Your skincare routine may need additional hydration and barrier support as the season changes.

What is the best fall facial in Chicago?

It depends on your skin. Someone experiencing dehydration may need a different facial than someone focused on acne, pigmentation or texture. At Facial Studio Magdalena, treatments are customized, and we also offer rotating seasonal facials designed around the time of year.

Is fall a good time for a chemical peel?

Fall is a popular time for professional peels because many Chicago clients naturally spend less time in intense outdoor sun than during summer. Appropriate treatment and diligent sun protection are still essential.

Can acne-prone skin use hydrating products?

Yes. Acne-prone skin can also be dehydrated. The key is choosing appropriate products rather than assuming acne needs to be dried out.

What treatments can help post-summer dark spots?

Depending on your skin and the type of pigmentation, we may recommend treatments such as Pigment Perfect Peel, BioRePeel or Skin Perfecting, along with targeted home care and consistent sun protection.

Where can I get a seasonal facial in downtown Chicago?

Facial Studio Magdalena is located in River North, Chicago, and offers customized corrective skincare along with rotating seasonal facial treatments.
